Day 177 - We're Only Making Plans...

... although not for Nigel, admittedy.

This morning, we ended up talking a bit about the birth. At some point soon, we need to make a birth plan. This is a list of what the mother would like to happen during the birth. It's not carved in stone; it's fine to say that you don't want an epidural on the birth plan, but if you're in the middle of labour and screaming obscenities that would make a navvy blush because the pain is so bad, then you can have one. It's an idealised state of affairs rather than an inviolate set of commands.

There's a number of things that go on to them and we ended up talking about a few of them. K___ has told me she doesn't want the baby put on her as soon as it's born; she would like her to be cleaned up first. K___ also wants to have an injection to push out the afterbirth. You can wait and it will come out as a natural part of labour, but that can take upto two hours. With the injection, the placenta disengages from the womb and can be pulled free by the midwife quite quickly.

Neither of us is into the idea of cooking the placenta and eating it. Because we're not freaks.

I said to K___ I wasn't particularly bothered about cutting the umbilical cord; she had thought I would want to.

It was good to talk about this stuff. Come the day, K___ may not be in a position to tell me what she wants, hence the Birth Plan. Need to do the whole thing soon!
