Day 279 - So Ya Gotta Hang On 'Til Tomorrow

Tomorrow is the due date.

We know - have mentioned on here - that only about five percent of babies are born on the actual due date, but nevertheless, we can't help but have some feelings, some hopes, that tomorrow will be the big day.

In an effort to try and jolly things along, we had a curry this evening. K___ had a phall. I cannot eat phalls. This is because they are made from lava and nuclear reactor cores. K___ eats them without blinking. Curry is known to hurry along birth, but whether it works for us, we've yet to find out...

Being slightly more realistic, it is more likely than not that K___ will go overdue by some amount or other. She had a midwife appointment with K__ on Friday. For the most part it was a standard appointment; everything seems perfectly fine and groovy. However, talk did turn to what would happen if K___ went over.

The midwives are allowed to do up to three membrane sweeps. A membrane sweep is where a midwife runs a finger around the cervix. Doing this can cause the membranes of the baby's amniotic sac to separate from the neck of the womb and releases hormones called prostaglandins that can cause birth to start. It's a lot easier for me to type that than it is to have it done, I suspect, but it is the best bet of non-pharmaceutical induction. They have to leave two days between each sweep. Since K___ has said that she will allow pharmaceutical induction after 14-16 days, this means that come next Saturday, sweeping may begin.

For now, however, we've got our fingers crossed.

Hang in there--as if you have another choice. Baby will be here soon enough, and you'll forget about all this waiting. In the meantime, do keep enjoying yourselves, and do me a favor--go see a movie and report back what the inside of a movie theater looks like these days. I'm afraid that I won't see one for another several years. Can't wait for the good news.
