Day 45 - The Name Game

K___ got a babies names book free with some pregnancy magazine. My name is explained in a new and exciting way that has no bearing on what my parents reckoned the one they used said. We're pretty much chosen on names, though there's some space for middle names to be added and no, I'm not about to reveal all on here. You'll just have to wait. Only just over seven months to wait...

I've just had a look at a parent's site and decided to poke my nose into their names forum and I must confess, I'm a bit confused. There's all these people saying things like, 'I was wondering about 'Twatnugget'. What do you think?'. Now, if you want to call your kid 'Twatnugget', clearly you, rather than the poor child are the ideal candidate for the name, but fair enough; your kid, your business.

What is happening on this forum is people are writing in and going, 'Hmmm... sorry, but I don't like it at all' or even (and this is completely genuine) 'It reminds me of my old PE teacher, so I wouldn't go for it.'

Sorry? Pardon?

I don't know what's worse; wanting to call a kid some made-up name because you think it's exotic (and anyone from the UK is now thinking 'Spudelica'), asking complete strangers whether they like your choice of name or responding to such a request and imagining that your personal history forms a useful basis that should be taken into account when naming a complete stranger's child...

So, with that in mind, K___ and I are thinking of some names, and you can all post comments about them. Here's our shortlist of names*:

Britney Jade (girl)
Twatnugget (unisex)
Derek Ian Mark Peter Steven Steven (boy)
Metallica (girl)
Barbie-Mattell (Girl)
Wolverine (boy)
Legolas (boy)
Chlamydia (girl)

Let's see which one you can convince us to go with... Either that, or I discover no one actually reads this blog...

* no, don't be ridiculous. Of course we're not.

  1. Of course if it is a girl we won't be able to call it Ashtray as Ashtray's a boys name!

(cue anyone who didn't watch Harry Enfield scratches their head in puzzlement!)

Which episode of Harry Enfield is the 'Ashtray's a boy's name' quote from?
