Day 139 - A Flower?

I emerged from a chrysalis of sleep to find myself lying in a v-shape formed by a couple of large cushions that were too small to go flat in the gap they'd been shoved in. It had been perfectly comfortable. Unfortunately, M__'s house had something of a dearth of curtains in the conservatory and it was bright as fuck in there. I stole a look at the time. Eight thirty. Late for me, waaaay too early for the others, as I know from bitter experience. I grabbed a couple of ibuprofen for my alcohol-assaulted head, and then my iSpod. I selected a playlist of stand up tracks and closed my eyes. Comedy is quite a good soporific apparently. I dozed intermittently for the next hour and a half. Finally wakefulness (not to mention a full bladder) got too much and I had to get up. Head wasn't feeling too bad.

Eventually everyone else woke up and we made tea and crumpets. Had I not had to go across Hertfordshire and pick up K___ I would have been happy to stay there much longer. There's something I quite enjoy about the morning after a night of booze. Not the hangover, but the company always seems good and time seems to be as slow as it was when I was a child rather than the state of panic it seems to be in the rest of the time.

Of course, I did have K___ to pick up, so I grabbed my gear and jumped into the car and headed off down completely unknown roads, hoping my brief glance at a map before leaving would hold me in good stead. It did and I made reasonable time.

K___ and I had a great big hug in L___'s hallway. She had forgotten her mobile, so I hadn't been able to speak to her or text the previous night. Turns out that the narcolepsy I used to bang on about such a few short weeks ago seems to be in remission. Whilst everyone else was boozing away in to the early hours of Sunday morning, my pregnant wife was matching them for staying up late sober.

Disgraceful.

Although the girls night had been a celebration of K___'s best friend's impending wedding, it seemed that K___ had also been a recipient of some generous largesse. K___ got a book about shoes (like she needs encouraging), some photo frames, pregnancy beauty pack and an exotic soap thingy in the shape of a whatsit. I'm sure there's a proper term for these things, but I'm a bloke. It's soap, all right?

Our baby girl received a cute white top, a tee-shirt and matching shorts (described by K___ as 'baby hotpants'. I'm not sure I approve), scratch mittens and a a baby sock twisted in a certain way and attached to a stick, so it looked like a flower.

A flower..?

Yes; a rose. Stop trying to force in deliberate references to prog songs, for fuck's sake. This is supposed to be about the baby.

Finally, there were a few large plastic nappy pins - two in blue, two in pink, because they were bought before the purchaser knew the sex of the baby.

Thank you all!
