Olivia is absolutely obsessed with the BBC show 'In the Night Garden'. Although I don't like her to watch too much TV she does like the Teletubbies and Night Garden a lot and so we let her watch those when she is a good girl. I would rather she watched a few selected shows over and over rather than just watched whatever is on. I don't just park her in front of the TV but we watch together and talk about what is going on. I don't believe that all TV stunts development as Olivia quite obviously engages with what is going on in the programme and we talk about the story and the characters.
Night Garden is absolute gibberish for anyone over 3 but Olivia loves it. There are some rather bizarre characters and the whole thing makes Teletubbies look frankly intellectual but it certain appeals to the under 5s. The characters all have names like Makka Pakka, Igglepiggle and the Tombliboos and the dialogue, such as it is, is similarly nonsense. What I really like about it is that it is classic old luvvie Sir Derek Jacobi who does the voice over. I like to just imagine him in a BBC sound studio giving it s bit of 'don't worry Igglepiggle, let's catch the Ninky Nonk'. The money must be good...
Night Garden is big business in the toddler world at the moment and the BBC seem to have whored it out big time. You can buy practically anything branded with ITNG. Olivia has wall stickers in her bedroom and a few books etc. She also has some Night Garden tights and T'shirts. One day last week we put her in a cute pink skirt, pink Night Garden Tights and a Night Garden T'shirt. She looked very cute but I was put in mind of a certain part of Waynes World...
